Dear friends of culture at the Centro,
On one day this week, I came across the word ‘bendición’, blessing, twice.
The contexts were different: once it appeared to me in a conversation with a farmer about the rain that has now washed many parts of the island clean and thoroughly soaked the soil, so that the water, well-dosed and not flooding or overflowing, will be able to stimulate the plants to grow in the shortest possible time. What a noticeable difference it makes whether plants that have been planted by human hands are watered with desalinated seawater or with one of these blessed downpours.
The second time it happened was at night. My neighbour from Lanzarote was walking his dog, as I was doing, when we met on the edge of civilisation, not far from our homes. Here the street lighting and the asphalt road come to an end. And the volcanic landscape from the last eruption almost 300 years ago extends to the horizon. The impression created by the view to the west is not deceptive, because after lava rock, coast and Atlantic Ocean, there is actually nothing for a very, very long time. After a brief, warm greeting and a few questions about how we are, there is a pause and we look up. We are standing under a dark blue dome sprinkled with stars that envelops us. ‘Poder vivir así es una bendición,’ says the native of the area. It is a blessing to be able to live like this. To walk out of the house, walk a little way and then look up at the sky sparkling in such purity.
Yes, that's it. And if it rains too...
Warm regards,
Mikaela Nowak
