Dear friends of culture and of the island,
On the trails of Lanzarote, it is possible that you will come across a shrike, called „alcaudón“ in Spanish. These solitary birds are not only easy to spot in the arid landscape, but also attract attention with their special way of singing and warning calls.
I have the impression that they are birds with a curious attitude towards humans. With their predatory gaze, they carefully watch the movements around them and let you approach them as they have their surrounding under control. It is also this gaze that follows mice and lizards, their favourite food here.
Sitting on a thorn bush, ‘my’ shrike with his Zoro look greets me in the morning. Clever as they come, he has also speared his prey in the lower jaw so that he can feed on it for longer. The attached photo shows the already bony remains of ‘my’ shrike... Can you recognise them?
It's these little discoveries that surprise me so much!
From the bottom of my heart
