Activities week 20

Dear friends of the island,

I am looking at a bench in front of a pretty little shop in La Villa de Teguise. Someone has tied a piece of string to the armrest. It seems pointless, as I cannot see that anything has been tied or fastened to it.

Stepping back a little, with my eyes on the bench, I watch a sparrow land on the armrest and start working on the string. It pecks and pulls at it until it is satisfied and can fly back with its beak full. Then the next one arrives... 

This string seems to be a wonderful source of material for busy nest builders! DIY stores in spring.

I wonder if the person who put up the string was thinking of sparrows?
